MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF REPORTING YEAR

I. KERALA

  1. CARD - Jalanidhi PROJECT

    In co operation with the Government of Kerala, CARD has implemented three Jalanidhi projects in Malappuram and Kollam districts. The main objective of this project is to provide potable water to the community population where lack of water is a major problem. With the support of the Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitary Agency (KRWSA), Gramapanchayath and participation of the people we successfully implemented the project in the target area. This programme benifited 26 families.

  2. CARD - Rain Water Harvesting Programme

    CARD has a vital role in popularizing Rain Water Harvesting in the State, with the financial assistance of CAPART. We had already constructed 50 units in Veliyanadu Block. We started construction of Ferro Cement Tank under Western Ghats Development Programme (WGDP) in " Placherithodu" area of Pazhavangadi Panchayat and now we are taking orders and transferring technologies for the construction of Ferro Cement Tanks.

  3. CARD - Panchayath Resource Mapping

    Inorder to achieve the independency of village, Panchayath Resource Mapping (PRM) is an essential thing. Through PRM we can understand and evaluate the existing natural resources like sand, water etc. in a given area. CARD has undertaken the ‘PRM’ Project with the assistance of Kerala Land Use Board and co operation from volunteers of the area. In the reporting year we had completed the PRM in Kunnamthanam, Peringala and Kalloopara Panchayath.

  4. CARD - Western Ghats Development Programme (WGDP)

    Western Ghats Development Programme (WGDP) was implemented by CARD at Ranny, Angadi, Pazhavangadi and Naranamoozhi grama panchayaths of Pathanamthitta District and is still continuing. The Planning and Economic department and Agriculture department of the Government of Kerala is supporting this programme. The objective of the programme are soil and water conservation, minor irrigation works, rain water harvesting, agricultural inputs and income generation programmes. In the reporting year CARD has newly initiated “Placheri Thodu” development programme, which includes construction of ferro cement tank, check dam moisture pits and vegetable cultivation.

  5. CARD - Self Help Groups

    Elevation of poverty through employment is the major task behind SHG activities, women empowerment`, poverty eradication, finanacial stability, self sufficiency and village fellowships are the main objectives of the SHG. In the reporting year CARD is operating 125 active SHG with the technical and financial assistance of NABARD. And CARD has arranged financial loan to SHG from different banks for SHG activities like small scale industries, Rexin Bag Unit, cattle rearing etc.,

  6. CARD - AHVY Project ( AMBEKAR HASTA SHILP VIKAS YOJANA) ANGAMALY.

    Under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India the Office of the Development Commissioner Handicrafts launched AHVY project in 2002. The scheme envisages a package of support to the cluster of Handicrafts artisans, which includes basic inputs and infrastructure support in addition to capacity enhancement to cater to target market. The main objective of the scheme is to empower artisans by making them active entrepreneurs cum primary stake holders in the process of development and bringing them to a visible platform for easy access to domestic and overseas market. And to upgrade artisans skill through appropriate Design & Technology Intervension so as to enable them to use quality raw materials, tools and equipment to produce value added items. CARD is implementing these activities at Angamaly Block, in Ernakulam District since 2002. The AHVY at Angamaly extends its activities in four Grama Panchayath in and around Angamaly. There are 30 SHG’s " Self Help Groups " were formed, each SHG having 20 members. The SHG’s are named Shilpa, they have been clustered into four federations and are registered. The AHVY is functioning under the monitoring of O/o DC (H), Handicrafts Marketing & Service Extension Centre Thiruvanathapuram, Govt. of India. Major Acivities of AHVY during 2007 - 2008 Six Months integrated Design and Technical Developments Project was conducted during the year, sixty artisans participated in Sri. Gaurav Sharma (NID) Chandigarh, Sri Susanth C.S.(NID) faculty, Bangalore and Sri. Sundermohan IIT Mumbai led the training.

    • 20 improved tool kits were distributed to the artisans
    • Participated in Handicrafts sourcing show at Dilly Haat, Delhi on February 2008.
    • Participated in different Handicrafts exhibition organized by O/o DC(H)
    • Set up one Common facility service center CFC at Mundangamatam in Malayatoor- Neelessawaram panchayath.
    • To the welfare of the Artisans they were enrolled into the Jana Sree Bhima Yojna of LIC.
    • The eligible Artisans received Scholarship of Shiksha Saha Yojna
    • 200 artisans were enrolled into the medical claim policy of Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swasthya Bhima Yojna for Artisans. Artisans got medical aid.

  7. CARD - Haripad Unit

    Inorder to provide vocational training to the needy and economically weak youths in surroundings of Haripad village of Aleppey district, CARD has started this unit in the year of 1990. CARD Haripad unit is providing training on tailoring, embroidary fabric painting, carpentary, rexin bag stiching etc. The units raising their income through the sales of its major products like shirts, school bags, furnitures, wafer and squash. Under one unit manager one instructure and six piece workers are working here.

  8. CARD - Better Home

    This unit was started in the year of 1999 with the major objective of providing employment opportunity for the poor ladies in the society. They are providing tailoring and embroidary training the the girls. And also they have one production and sales units of embroidary and cross stitch cloth materials. In the reporting year 95 students has successfully completed their training. One office assistant, one instructure and three piece workers are working unit.

  9. CARD - Mar Thoma Printing School, Ranny

    These production cum training units mainly aims to provide self employment opportunity through the income generation programme, school-college bag making unit, printing and binding units, toilet soaps and lotion making units. In the reporting year they manufactured and sold 1,31,078 books through different schools. 966 school bags and 250 college bags were produced.

  10. CARD - Pampa Umbrella Unit

    This unit was started in the year 1999 as a training unit for umbrella making. Six women have been trained and are working in this unit. In the reporting year 5000 umbrellas were manufactured and marketed through different SHG’s

  11. CARD - Gramolpannam

    CARD - Gramasakthi is a registered selling unit of CARD for the promotion of marketing different handicrafts works, cotton and khadi dress materials, honey and squash which are the product of different SHG’s of CARD. CARD - Gramolpannam is a common platform for selling out the village agriculture and handicrafts products. One DTP Centre with the facilities of STD, Fax and Xerox copies is also functioning along with showroom activities.

  12. CARD - CDEP, Kalayapuram Unit

    CARD - Kalayapuram Unit is mainly for the enhancement of SHG’s through the production and training of apiary. 13 active SHG’s with different projects and programmes are the support of village and block panchayath under the supervision of CARD.

  13. CARD - KVK (www.kvkcard.org)

    CARD - KVK was established in the year 1995 under Indian Council of Agricultural Research with Christian Agency For Rural Development (CARD) as host organization. Since its inception KVK is very keen in the upliftment of farming community.

    The regular activities of KVK as per the mandates of KVK (Front life demonstrations, on farm trials, training for farmers, extension functionaries and unemployed youth) In 2007-08, a total of 247 trainings were conducted out of which 116 are on campus, 101 off campus, 20 sponsored trainings and 10 vocational trainings. Six Front line demonstration were conducted on banana, ginger and coconut, beetle vine, ginger and sweet potato (value addition). Similarly, four on farm trials were conducted in rice, cow pea and poultry chicks.

    Major Acivities of CARD KVK

    1. Farmer Facilitation : This aim to resolve the localised issue of the farmers in farming and using modern agricultural equipments.
    2. Onfarm Testing : This programme is for the farmers in disease management in and enhance the income in small holdings.
    3. Fruit Harvester : CARD-KVK has designed a fruit harvest which can be most efficiently used in homestead. This tool is mainly designed for the harvest of different fruits.
    4. IGNOU Special study Centre : CARD-KVK has been identified as special study centre of IGNOU, New Delhi. The course programme is designed particularly to impact knowledge and skills for minimising the post harvest losses, primary processing of fruits and vegetables at the production areas/clusters and production of value added products.
    5. Promotion of Mushroom Cultivation : CARD - KVK has been promoting mushroom cultivation as a simple and novel livelihood technology for the rural families in the district. During the reporting year, 250 numbers of small and medium units were initiated and 6010 Kg. of Mushroom Spawn were supplied to the farmers.
    6. Discrimination of Vermicomposting Technology : This is more pronounced with the families having very low extent of land and that has to resort to out side source for the organic manure which is costly.
    7. Introduction of Watermelon as a remunerative short duration crop: Conversion of paddy fields into current fallows is one of the major problems identified in Pathanamthitta district. Keeping paddy land fallow for year leaves the paddy land unsuitable for further cultivation permanantly and resorting to alternatives which are also enviornmently hazardous was of its utilisation. Water melon being a short duration summer crop could well fit in to paddy fallow period without changing the cropping pattern. During the year CARD KVK organised 35 numbers of training programme benefiting 923 number of farmers in the district.
    8. Planting materials supply from KVK farm : During the reporting year CARD KVK produced and supplied 98,034 numbers of seedling of fruit, medicinal, timber, spices, ornamental plants and plantation crops.

  14. CARD - RCH programme (Reproductive & Child Health)

    CARD has started its RCH programme with the support of KVHS Kottayam and ministry of health and family welfare in Kanjirappally block of Kottayam district in 2006. It is functioning in 8 wards under Koruthodu and 2 wards of Erumeli Gramapanchayaths. These RCH programmes mainly aims to improve immunization service and to provide MMR and Hepatatis B Vaccination, to increase complete ANC to pregnant women, to improve adolescents knowledge regarding reproductive health, and to address unmet needs for family planning and preventive of RTI/STI. Inorder to attain these objectives CARD has organising health awareness classes, nutritional supplement programs, medical camps, counselling services, and the formation of health clubs like “Arogyasamithi” and “Adolescent club” were also formed during the reporting year. The project has released two Newsletter named "Arogyamithram". In the reporting year, CARD was selected as the Mother NGO for RCH programme in Pathanamthitta district, with support and financial assistance of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) under ministry of Health and Family welfare, CARD has monitored its form field NGO’s, ie, Bodhana Tiruvalla, NRDS Naranganam, Marthoma Medical Mission, Ranny and WHI Trivandrum in their fields under Puramattom, Kokkathodu, Perunadu and Seethathodu PHCs respectively.

  15. Education and child development programe

    Support children in their growth is one of our goal. To achieve this goal "CARD" initiates various educational programmes for children. Behaviour modification and remedial education are the important components of these programms.

    1. CARD Child Development Centre, Karavaloor.

      This project is being assisted by "Caruna Bal Vikas" - a registered organisation of Compassion International.

      This project was started in 10th November 2003 with few children. But now we are supporting 250 children in their studies. The major objectives of the programme are the physical, social, spiritual and educational development of the children. Rev.John Thomas is working as project director.

    2. CARD - Child Development Centre, Vattavada

      This is a project function in Vattavada, also supported by Caruna Bal Vikas. The centre was started in 2002 and now they are providing its services to 250 needy and economically weak children. Rev. K.V. Cherian is a project Director of this project.

    3. CARD - Child Survival Programme, Vattavada (CARD - CSP)

      CARD - CSP is a project in Vattavada with the support from Caruna Bal Vikas first implemented in Vattavada, with support from compassion. This is the needy pregnant mothers and infants ageing from 0-3 years. Compassion aims at holistic development of the target group in four fold areas of development like physical development, cognitive development, socio emotional development and spiritual development. Each beneficiary is called as mother child unit (MCU).

II. MADHYA PRADESH

CARD has extended its service area from state to state with a vision to serve the under privileged and marginalised groups in various target areas. In Madhyapradesh through Kristh Seva Kendra (CARD-KSK) CARD has implemented various programmes. In the districts like Dewas, Indore, Khargan and Kshipra of Madhyapradesh. Rev. Shibu Samuel is the director of the project.

  1. Holistic Child Development Project

    The main project KSK has undertaken a child focus community development project by the name "Holistic Development Project" which is the being sponsored by the Holistic Child Development India (HCDI), the Indian Partner of KNH International. This is the first project of HCDI in this catagory.

    The Holistic Development Project has successfully completed ten years of inspiring development activities because of its relentless efforts along with the people in the project area. The project has been truly holistic in approach, as it has touched the lives of all people groups in the villages in one way or the other. Starting with the children as the entry points, later moving onto their families and finally involving the entire community, there have been tangible and measurable changes brought about through the projects interventions.

    During the year under review, the project has continued its programmes with a special emphasis given to agriculture and other livelihood development activities. Attention was also given the development of wasteland and water conservation programmes considering the villager’s increased consciousness and persistent demand on the need for development of their resources. It has also been a period of consolidation for the project with the wealth of comprehensive data and experience gained over the years along with close monitoring and evaluation of results. This has proved to be of great help in focusing on emerging trends in the need critical issues faced by the community. We are happy to report that CARD-KSK, was selected as the center, for compassion project of HCDI.

    Their major programme are, early child care centres, remedial education classes, village clinics, non formal education centre, training and awareness programme, community based groups wasteland and water conservation programme.

    A non formal education centre is functioning with the objective to educate the school dropouts especially girl Children who are reluctant to continue their education.

    On the whole the project has been delivering fruitful service to the beneficiaries. As the project is near the phasing out stage, special care has been taken to share the responsibilities with the beneficiaries and ensure maximum possible participation in all activities. Now is the time for consolidation of all the gains made so far through the project activities and ensure maximum sustainability. KSK had formulated its withdrawal policy in discussion with its staff and community members and the document has received the approval of all the stakeholders of the project. We are looking forward to its best possible implementation in the days to come.

  2. Sarvodaya Child Development Centre, Dewas.

    Sarvodaya child Development came in to existence from July 2005. The project has started the aim of an Integrated Development of the village community in and around Sarvodaya Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Jaising Nagar of Dewas District. For the achievement of the various objectives different programmes are planned to cater to the needs of various groups. The programmes were planned for children, family and community members. The Caruna Bal Vikas has started assisting our programme from July 2005.

    2007 children were supported through this project. The activities are similar as explained above.

  3. Sarvidata Child Survival Project, Dewas.

    Sarvodaya Child Survial Project came in to existence in January 2007. This is a new initiative to cater to the needs of mother and child in and around sarvodaya nagar, Dewas. There are 50 mother child units (MCU). Caruna Bal Vikas has started assisting this programme since January 2007 This programme is beneficial to the family members also helping the future generation in a better healthy way. The training was conducted for mothers on various subjects.

  4. Sapna HIV/AIDS Project

    KSK has started a new project in collaboration with CRS (Catholic Relief Society) for prevention of HIV/AIDS programme. HIV/AIDS has becomes aglobally accepted threat to the very existence of the human race. Sapna HIV/AIDS Project covered 15 villages of Dewas block which comprises of nearly 1700 house holds. The goal of the project is to equip the community with optimum level awareness regarding all aspects of HIV/AIDS and STDs. Street plays awareness programme for both community and school going students, audio visual shows, AIDS day celebrations, Health checkup camps, exposure trips are the major activities of the projects General Programmes.

  5. St.Thomas English Medium High School, Kshipra

    St. Thomas English Medium High School, Kshipra has been functioning well during the academic year 2007-08. The school management and staff have been gladly serving the community by providing quality education, which is highly essential in context of the villages. This year we have a total strength of 456 students and the total strength of teaching community is 19 in number. We had 100% results in standard class V and VIII. In Xth MP Board examination one of our students secured 93% and he was in the District merit list.

    The school provides conveyance facilities to the children who are coming from interior villages. The school fraternity celebrated various days of national and religious importance such as Independence day, Teacher’s day, Republic Day, AIDS day, X’ mas day etc. Installation ceremony of the School leaders and house captain was held on October 13. There were also the school annual sports and an exposure and entertainments one-day picnic conducted for the children.

    The hostel has a total strength of thirty-two boys studying in different classes from KG to X. The hotel has been providing excellent opportunity for the all round growth of the children. Hostel is focusing on all-round development of the children. Morning and evening prayers, special programmes, yoga training and sports activities were included in the curriculum of the hostel.

III. CHATHISGHAT

  1. Ameri Child Development Project, Bilaspur

    Ameri child Development centre came in to existence from May 2004, purpose of the project was the social upliftment of Ameri village near Bilaspur, Initially a balavadi was started for the education of poor children in the village. Compassion International has started assisting our Balavadi from May 2004. The basic aim of compassion was the four-fold development of the child along with the parents.

    The spiritual area covers the understanding of God the Father. Jesus Christ, the son the Holy Spirit, the comforter and the Word of God, God’s purpose in creation, the Family the Church and the self.

    Every month each fourth Saturday moral classes are conducted (SMS). Books and workbooks are provided designed by CARD KSK, Kshipra. VBS is conducted.

IV. ORISSA

  1. Mamatha Child Development Project

    Mamtha child development project started from March 2006 onwards. The project is focusing on the all-round development of the Lubancrdh village of the Urlbani Panchayath of M.rampur block at Khalahandi district of Orissa. A day care centre and school are functioning with the help of Compassion East India. There is 147 child sponsorship in this new project.
